I do not like the term
“treehugger.”
Trees symbolize death to me
instead of life.
How many more of
my brothers and sister must
wear a necklace of rope tied
to a tree for one to understand that
this is an issue?
Instead, they blame such acts on
a mental illness.
A mental disorder in which they treat
as if it is nonexistent.
As if it is nothing more than sadness
that will be cured as time passed.
Funny how our world says time heals
when we’re still trapped in 1954
leaving it to teenagers and college students
to still fix a corrupted government.
People say it was long ago,
but that was only 66 years ago!
Most people still have their grandparents
and great grandparents in their lives.
This is not a new issue.
This is the realization of the blind.
The cries of the mute.
The sounds of the deaf.
The crimes of criminals
they allowed to roam free.
The tears of colored men and women who fought
just to get a sip of water
flows within our veins.
Their apologies
“I am sorry I let you down.”
now moves us to do better for
future generations to come!
We will succeed where many failed
for that is our calling.
A generation of anxious children
now curling their knuckles.
Iron-blooded they stand
before adults armed with tear gas
and weapons.
Iron-willed they chant peacefully;
voices lifting like angels
of gospels.
Beauty lies within colors.
Beauty lies within tearful eyes
and sore throats.
Beauty lies within change.

We are often told to follow a certain norm prevalent in society, it’s like there’s this certain checklist or labels for something to be ‘perfect’. We wait for society to judge us, hanging on by a string of likes on our instagram page. But, do we really need others to define OUR perfect? Moreover, don’t our true selves lie beyond those rugged, old and boring standards? Hold yourself up and look in the mirror. Choose to be free.
Men’s Rights: Balancing the Gender Equation
We live in world where it is our right to fight for injustices we see happen to others or ourselves. We protest, we riot, we demand for change and in time, when we all come together, no one can oppress us. We create a spark through spreading information through articles like these, that inspires others to act. I, like may of you, have witnessed people being put down for nothing but their gender. If you believe in true gender equality, you must include all the variables in the equation, like the Men’s Right’s Movement, and hear the male side of the story.
RAPE, why is it normalized?
RAPE,searches state that 91.6%of the world’s rape cases are left unreported, and this is one thing that hurts me the most, there are several reasons to why women do not report their rape,it can either be that they are ashamed, cultures, traditions and several more. If they are not going to speak up, it’s about we do! Mind you there are several types of rapes, some that have moved me quite a lot(payback rape,LGBTQ rape, custodial rape, gang rape, child rape, prison rape, serial rape, date rape). Hopefully having my poem on this site will open up a few eyes and declare victory for us women, and also establish a secure future for the kids playing hopscotch around town.
Wow your piece is so inspiring and passionate! I agree that our generation will be the one to bring and demand change. Also I absolutely love your ending!!
This is a very moving and touching piece. It calls for action, and that’s what we are trying to do on this website. I really loved the line “We will succeed where many failed for that is our calling.” as it prompts us, as the future leaders, to bring about change.
I agree! I love the way you expressed that it is up to us as the future leaders to bring change into this world . Keep up the good work!
This is amazing! I love that you felt confident enough to speak up, and in such a beautiful poem. You have an amazing talent and I hope to see you use it more often! Thank you for sharing.
This is a very inspiring and amazing piece of literature. I love your writing style and I totally agree with everything you wrote! You expressed your feelings through a work of art and I felt that as very touching, and fantastic! Keep it up!
Such an outspoken poem that really touches the heart showing that the old scars of black oppression and white supremacy are still there despite being proclaimed as gone and in the past. A great poem
Your point of view caught my eye and was very interesting. Thanks. I have a question for you.
Hi! I’m willing to answer!
